Hazelton area allowed timber harvest sees 50 per cent reduction

The province has decreased the amount of timber than can be harvested annually from the Kispiox Timber Supply Area.

It surrounds the Hazelton area, Ceadervale, Cranberry Junction, and further north.

Changes went into effect on Thursday, with the new allowed cut being 496,000 cubic metres.

The province said it was about a 50 per cent reduction from the previous cut allowance, but still remains higher than the average harvest between 2019 and 2023 of about 356,000.

The change were made due to effects on what is legally and economically available to harvest, new ungulate winter ranges for moose, and impacts of bark beetle on the timber supply.

It added the supply area overlaps eight first nations, which were consulted during the review process.

The province said the allowable annual cut is reviewed at least once every ten years under the Forest Act.
