Quesnel’s Board of Education plans to create a public memo about energy drink consumption

Energy drinks, specifically concerns about their consumption, were on the agenda at last week’s School Board meeting in Quesnel.

A motion was passed to put out a media release sharing the effects and concerns around energy drink consumption.

Board Chair Lisa Boudreau says “I’ve actually heard from several parents and several teachers and I was called upon to bring this forward to the Board.  We had a recent death in our country of a teenager that passed away because they had an energy drink that maybe combined with some medications. And I think this is just a way of sharing awareness and taking care of kids.”

Boudreau says they are not trying to tell families what they can and can’t do.

“No of course. We actually can’t by law tell students what they can and can’t bring to school as a food or drink, of course unless there is an anaphylactic allergy, but there is certainly a place for us to encourage and inform and educate students and families the best we can.”

Boudreau says the intent is to encourage families to have conversations with their children about energy drink consumption and to consider limiting or avoiding sending those beverages to school.
