New Bulkley Valley Community Council formed to tackle social issues

The Salvation Army is looking for new ways to solve social issues in the Bulkley Valley with the formation of a community council.

Made up of 13 members including the mayors of Telkwa and Smithers, Director for the Bulkley Valley Ministries Tim Sharp says their aim is to know where the need is in the community.

“Our soup kitchen and our drop-in centre is pretty full during the week. And so looking down the road we might need to look at expanding services…and when we expand; what type of programs, what type of services should we offer,” says Sharp.

Sharp hopes that the diversity, expertise and experience of the members of the newly formed council will be able to find creative ways to deal with issues like hunger in the community.

He says they’ll be meeting once every two months to help give the Salvation Army direction.

The community council members include; Ken Penner, Council Chairperson George Whitehead, Rachel Chapman, Scott Olesiuk, Alissa Angel, Randy Bell, Rebecca Bell, Paul Jungalus, Bulkley Valley Ministries Director Tim Sharp, Darcy Repen Mayor of Telkwa, Taylor Bachrach Mayor of Smithers, Paul Batley, and Matt Hexter.
