Students at Muheim Elementary went through a sampler of careers in the Smithers area during Thursday’s Career Day.
The annual event has been held for over 10 years with presentations both at the school, and throughout the community.
“It’s a chance to have people talk about their skills, passions, and it has students reflecting on some of the different areas that they might want take part in one day,” said Principal Liliana Pesce.
Included in this year’s fair were first responders, sushi chefs, a wildlife biologist, hair stylist, and more.
Pesce said along with learning about what jobs are available in the community, the event is also about learning how some people came into the careers they have.
“Sometimes, [the kids] don’t really understand what the connection is between a passion, and where they can take that passion,” she said.
Another main point Pesce said about the Career Day is the school uses students’ feedback to both choose what careers are represented the next year, and lets students have a choice which ones they visit.
She added surprise or new careers featured get a lot of positive feedback from the students.
“I think that just speaks to the importance of taking some risks, opening up our presentations to some new and unique presentations, and really opening the doors to show students there are so many different options out there.”
Similar events are also held at other schools in the region, with one having a connection to Muheim’s event.
The schools hosts Career Day typically in May.
