Smithers Salvation Army Director has a new role with the wildfire relief effort

The Salvation Army has been taking care of fire fighters and evacuees across the province during the wildfire crisis.

Tim Sharp – the Director of the Bulkley Valley Ministries – is now working as the operations officer for the Incident Command Centre.

Sharp says the job is to make sure food and supplies get to where they’re needed.

“We have mobile canteen units out feeding in Kamloops, Merrit, Surrey, Quesnel, Vernon and Kelowna. And we also have food services that are feeding people in Prince George at the college.”

He says along with food, they’re helping with other supplies including toiletries.

Sharp was in Prince George for the past week providing emotional and spiritual care for evacuees.

“Just to see the compassion as some of our volunteers have come alongside. And just to walk with the people as they go through this difficult time,” says Sharp.

Since the start of the wildfires, Sharp says the Salvation Army has provided over 71,000 items like food and other supplies.

Prince George now has more than 8,300 wildfire evacuees, more than half of whom are staying with residents.

CNC and the Northern Sport Centre are hosting about 700 people, while slightly fewer than 900 are staying in RVs.
