The identity of a man who died while in the custody of the RCMP in Smithers has been released.
Fifty-three year old Jacobus Jonker died in a Victoria hospital on Saturday, a week after being pepper-sprayed by police.
RCMP was attempting to arrest him when he become non-compliant.Â
After stating he had trouble breathing, Jonker was taken to Bulkley Valley General Hospital before being transported to Victoria General for a higher level of care.Â
The BC Coroners Service and the Independent Investigations Office continue to investigate this death.
