A national handgun freeze is now in effect.
In a statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says with handgun violence increasing across Canada it is the government’s responsibility to take urgent action to remove the weapons from communities.
As of today (Friday), the freeze will make it illegal to buy, sell, transfer, import, or export handguns anywhere in the country.
The freeze is part of the Liberals Bill C-21 which is still being debated in the House of Commons.
In May, as step one of a national freeze the government banned the import of handguns.
