Smithers women’s hockey player wins silver in Alberta college playoffs

A Smithers born forward Gabriella Meier was among several women’s hockey players to win silver with the Red Deer Queens in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs.

The team lost 1-0 to the Lakeland Polytechnic Kodiaks in double over time.

“It was a really good experience. I wouldn’t have done it with any other group of girls,” said Meier.

This was her first year in the league and playing for the Queens after playing with the Northern Capitals in Prince George and the Smithers Storm.

“When I was in Smithers, I played with the guys so it’s a little different for me because now I’m playing with just girls which I personally enjoy more,” she said.

One of the main reasons Meier said she’s enjoyed playing with the Queens is the connection she’s built with the other players on top of the faster play.

“Playing for the Northern Capitols really got me experience and is probably what got me to where I am now from hockey class, to practices, to always being in the gym.”

She added her hockey class teacher was a large part of her getting a commitment in Red Deer.

Meier said she will be playing with the Queens again for the next hockey season while finishing her degree.
