Design chosen for new sign in Smithers

Smithers council has finally picked a design for a sign that will be installed at the corner of Main St and Highway 16.

The purpose of the sign is to direct people to the downtown core but councillors had a hard time agreeing on exactly what it should say and how it should look.

Deputy mayor Gladys Atrill says while it may have taken a long time to pick one of the options, she is happy with the outcome.

“It was just one of those things that council need to dig a little deeper and make sure their personal feelings were heard so when the decision was made no one was wishing they had said something,” she says.
Part of the money to pay for the sign is coming from an award that the town won last year for being open to business.

The rest will be paid for with a Northern Development Initiative Economic Development Base grant.

It will be installed in time for the main street festival scheduled for Father’s Day.
